This lesson walks students through real images of fluorescently tagged human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) as they undergo mitosis. The lesson contains embedded in-class polling questions and an associated worksheet that asks students to identify the stages of mitosis in both cell diagrams and real cell images.
learning objectives/
- Describe how the process of mitosis fits into the larger cell cycle
- Evaluate mechanisms that help regulate the process of mitosis
- Apply key mitosis vocabulary such as chromosome, chromatin, and sister chromatids
- Summarize and illustrate the stages of mitosis
- Evaluate real microscopy images of cells undergoing mitosis
- Categorize the images based on which phase of mitosis they depict
