Bio:
Matthew joined the Allen Institute in September 2023 as a Scientist on the Human Cell Types team, where he studies how cell types evolve across diverse species. He received his B.S. in Biochemistry and Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and subsequently worked in the laboratory of Jamie Thomson, generating and analyzing large-scale genomics datasets. Matthew went on to complete his Ph.D. in Developmental Biology at the University of California, San Francisco, where he was co-mentored by Alex Pollen and Jimmie Ye. During his doctoral work, he uncovered key innovations in inhibitory neuron diversity within the primate cerebrum and developed machine learning approaches to model cell type evolution using single-cell genomics data.
