STEM educators are invited to join us for a two-part virtual professional development workshop all about our open neuroscience concepts and science careers at the Allen Institute. Join us for an opportunity to ask neuroscientists all of the questions you and your students wonder about in class! 

This workshop takes place across 2 required sessions on February 27, 2024 and March 5, 2024 from 4:00 pm PST until 5:30 pm PST.

Workshop Highlights

  • Become familiar with real-world openly available neuroscience resources from the Allen Institute
  • Learn from scientists involved with current research
  • Identify potential research questions related to Allen Institute data that can be used for independent student projects
  • Facilitate discussions between students and scientists
  • Take a live video tour of Allen Institute’s state-of-the-art laboratory facilities
  • Discover a myriad of career pathways in science to share with students

Allen Institute’s Teacher Academy on the Fundamentals of Neuroscience will give local teachers the opportunity to ask questions to working scientists, interact with researchers to learn about STEM career pathways, take a live video tour of one of our labs, and get an introduction to Allen Institute open data resources.

Washington state educators will receive up to 4 STEM clock hours upon completion.

Requirements

  • Currently employed and teaching STEM, psychology, or career exploration courses (pre-service teachers are also eligible).
  • Able to attend both virtual sessions on February 27 and March 5 from 4-5:30pm PST, plus complete one hour of asynchronous work between sessions.
  • Interested in learning more about neuroscience research, innovative open data tools to share with students, and related STEM careers.

Application closes February 23rd, 2024 at 11:59 pm PST. Notifications of acceptance will be sent on a rolling basis until February 26, 2024. Zoom link will be provided to accepted participants.

Learn some of the fundamentals of neuroscience from one of our neuroscientists.

In week 2, you’ll be able to ask us anything! Participants will be assigned an asynchronous task to submit teacher and student generated questions about neuroscience fundamentals, open data tools, education materials, and questions for our career panelists.
