2024 Allen Distinguished Investigator award

The Allen Distinguished Investigator program provides three-year grants between $1M and $1.5M to individuals and teams.

Mechanobiology tools for dissecting drivers of membrane mechanics, form, and function

Our team will develop a novel technology to search through the genome to discover molecules that regulate membrane shape stability and mechanical resilience. We will   decipher how these newly discovered proteins help to endow the membranes with structure and the ability to adapt to physical stresses. Finally, we will study how these proteins impact the formation, shape stability, and function of engineered tissues.

  • Identify novel regulators of membrane mechanoadaptability by developing a high throughput filtration screening platform
  • Define the circuitry that regulates membrane mechanoadaptability
  • Determine the role of mechanoadaptability circuits in tissues

This project is part of the 2024 Membrane Biophysics cohort

Researchers in this cohort will focus on cellular membranes that separate cell contents from the surrounding environment, allow cells to change shape, exchange materials, and respond to their environment. Despite having been implicated in numerous human diseases, little is known about the principles governing cell membrane biology and biophysics. This cohort will expand the frontiers of our understanding of fundamental aspects of cell membrane form, function, and dynamics using innovative technologies and analytical frameworks, with important implications for basic science and human health.
