Maureen Cowen

Maureen Cowan, Ph.D.

Bioinformatics Scientist

Bio:

Maureen joined the Allen Institute for Immunology in 2025 as a Bioinformatics Scientist, specializing in spatial biology. She works within the Neuroimmune Interactions Program, applying spatial transcriptomics and computational tools to study how the peripheral nervous system influences immune cell function and organization within tissues.
Maureen earned her PhD in Neuroimmunology from the University of Virginia’s Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG), where she investigated neuroprotective roles of microglia during central nervous system infection using both experimental and computational approaches. Her earlier background includes a double major in Psychology and Biology, with research in behavioral and sensory neuroscience sparking her interest in brain-immune-tissue crosstalk.
She also serves on the editorial board of Data in Brief, an open-access Elsevier journal that publishes peer-reviewed data articles to enhance the transparency and reusability of research datasets.
