Mai-Lan Tomsen Bukovec, Vice President of Technology at Amazon Web Services (AWS), leads the Data and Analytics services that millions of AWS customers rely on for digital transformations, machine learning, generative AI, and next generation customer experiences. Mai-Lan has been working on high scale cloud services in AWS since 2010. Leading a global team of engineers, data scientists, and product managers, Mai-Lan is responsible for foundational cloud services offered by AWS, including data storage services such as Amazon S3, analytics services such as Redshift, streaming services such as Kinesis, and messaging services such as SQS). In her role, Mai-Lan offers the unique perspective of how data intersects with cloud transformations and generative AI.

Mai-Lan holds multiple patents and has led innovations that power industries ranging from media and entertainment to autonomous cars. She is directly responsible for much of the cloud technology that supports over a million data lakes running in the AWS cloud and has in particular run Amazon S3 for over 12 years. She owns both business P&L as well as the engineering of hyperscale cloud services.

Mai-Lan was named one of the Top 15 people in Enterprise Artificial Intelligence, and she appeared on the AI 100 list which recognizes the top 100 leaders innovating in AI. Mai-Lan regularly joins broadcast networks to discuss the importance of a data strategy to move quickly and securely with generative AI, and she speaks at industry events such as The Information’s Women in Technology, Media, and Finance Summit.

Apart from her focus on building foundational cloud services, Mai-Lan’s background as a mixed-race (Vietnamese/American) US career diplomat’s daughter has informed her global perspective as a leader. Mai-Lan spends significant time mentoring and supporting diverse populations as well as developing emerging leaders within and outside of Amazon. She actively engages as an executive sponsor and mentor of the diversity affinity group Asians at Amazon at Amazon, and has served as a US Peace Corps Forestry Volunteer in rural northern Mali, West Africa.
