Maria Elena Gamo is a Research Associate III at the Allen Institute's Seattle Hub for Synthetic Biology with a decade of experience spanning plant biotechnology, vaccine development, drug discovery, gene therapy, and synthetic biology. Gamo's scientific career began in agricultural biotechnology, where she spent five years focused on plant genetic engineering to develop healthier and more resilient crops. This work established a strong foundation in molecular biology, genetic engineering, and translational research.

She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Biotechnology from the University of the Philippines and later completed a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota. Building on her expertise in genetic engineering, she transitioned into biomedical research, where she spent the past five years contributing to projects in vaccine development, therapeutic discovery, gene therapy, and synthetic biology. Gamo's work has centered on applying advanced biological engineering approaches to address complex challenges in human health.
