Decoding consciousness, psychedelics, and the mind
Appearing before a packed ballroom, Allen Institute Meritorious Investigator Christof Koch took the stage at South by Southwest (SXSW) to explore one of science’s oldest unsolved questions: what is consciousness, and where does it come from?
Koch made the case for why studying consciousness matters, describing efforts to identify the specific brain activity responsible for conscious experience. One striking example: in the ICU, patients who can’t move or speak are often assumed to be unconscious, yet research shows nearly one quarter are actually aware.
Koch also spoke openly about his own mystical experience, describing a complete dissolution of self and a feeling of oneness with the universe, using it to challenge the assumption that consciousness can be fully explained by physics and biology alone. Koch shared that these experiences, whether triggered by psychedelics, meditation, or near-death events, are gaining serious scientific attention and represent one of the most exciting frontiers left to explore.
