Several different types of neurons shown in position against a rendering of the mouse brain. Reconstructions of multiple cells in a circuit will help neuroscientists better piece together complete neural circuits. These neurons sit in the neocortex, the outermost shell of the mammalian brain.

Stained neurons shown in slices of brain tissue from a human brain surgery patient who donated their tissue to research (two left images), a macaque monkey (second from right) and mouse brain (right). Allen Institute researchers are able to capture electrical information from these live human neurons, as well as their 3D shape and gene expression, through a technique known as Patch-seq. The human and macaque neurons are Betz cells, huge and specialized motor neurons that connect all the way to the spinal cord. These cells are a striking example of how similar types of neurons show specialization through evolution. The closest rodent relative to the primate Betz cell has very different features.
