details

Attendees will learn about publicly available datasets that require no, low/medium, or high coding experience from the Allen Institute. Then attendees will work together in groups and use a structured backwards design process to design activities that meet their shared learning objectives. During the workshop, attendees will work together to design both formative and summative assessments for students, an assessment plan for measuring the success of the activity, and plans for sharing the activity and outcomes.

Venue Details

The conference will be held at the Allen Institute in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle, about a 10 minute drive to downtown. A 270,000-square-foot life sciences building, it was purpose-built for life science research and facilitates our trademark team science approach amid abundant natural light and with stunning views of Seattle.

Upon arrival at the Allen Institute, check in at the lobby registration desk and pick-up your badge. Please wear your name badge provided at check in for the duration of the event.

Wifi Information: Institute Guest, Password: sounders

Please note: all attendees must remain in the designated meeting locations, wear provided event badges, and depart the building at the end of programming each day.

Pre-Workshop Prep

Please complete the following by Monday, July 21 at 8am:

  1. Confirm or create a Google Account and request access to the Workshop Google Drive Folder. We will approve your access as quick as possible.
  2. Watch this video on Open Science from UNESCO
  3. Add a slide (digital business card) to the “Getting to Know You” slide deck
  4. Take a look through “The Table” (our table of all neuroscience datasets with all metadata + alignment with Vision & Change, etc.)
  5. Take a look through the resources in the participant packet.

Getting to Seattle

  • The Seattle-Tacoma International airport is the closest airport to the Institute, about a 30-minute drive from the Allen Institute.
  • There are many options for getting from SeaTac Airport to downtown Seattle and the Institute, including Link Light Rail, taxis, Uber/Lyft and other app-based ride shares, or Shuttle Express.
  • For the most up to date and comprehensive information on getting around Seattle refer to the Visit Seattle Getting Around Website.
  • If you're planning to use public transportation, we recommend you download the OneBusAway app for helpful, real time updates on arrival times.
  • If you're driving, parking is available in the Allen Institute garage, accessible via Roy St. Please save your ticket for validation and bring it to the front desk.

Seattle Attractions

  • Seattle's top 25 things to do
  • Go to a Mariners Baseball Game
  • Places to eat near the Institute: South Lake Union features a buzzing restaurant scene with options ranging from fast casual to fine dining. There are over 400 food trucks in King County. See which ones are open near you using this food truck Food Truck tracking site.
