Developing Open Neuroscience Teaching Tools Workshop

Details

This four day in-person workshop will support educators in developing inquiry-based educational activities (ranging in scale from short single-class activities to CURE courses) that integrate Allen Institute’s open science data into their undergraduate neuroscience courses.

Participants will learn about publicly available datasets that require no, low/medium, or high coding experience from the Allen Institute. Then participants will work together in groups and use a structured backwards design process to design activities that meet their shared learning objectives. Workshop attendees will additionally work together to design both formative and summative assessments for students, an assessment plan for measuring the success of the activity and plans for sharing the activity and outcomes.

Event Details

Participants will:

  • Integrate Allen Institute open neuroscience data into their class(es)
  • Use backwards design to develop activities (or a course) for students (this includes LOs, formative & summative assessments for students, pre-class work, in-class work, and post-class work)
  • Develop a SoTL assessment plan for their activities/course
  • Implement the activities/course with students
  • Share completed activities/course design with an audience
  • Create instructor guide for using the activity
  • Engage in a community of practice during the 25-26 AY

Attendees will participate in a 4-day in-person workshop (July 21-24, 2025) at the Allen Institute in Seattle, WA (travel & meals plus $1,000 stipend will be provided). Attendees will also be included in a year-long facilitator-supported community of practice during the 25-26 academic year. Implementation of small educational activities should occur during 25-26 academic year, while full course designs can be implemented during 26-27 academic year.

The workshop is intended for undergraduate neuroscience educators who plan to integrate Allen Institute open neuroscience data into a course or develop a course based on Allen Institute open neuroscience data.

No coding experience is necessary, but if you would like to gain Python coding experience so that you can work with datasets that require programming, we are offering Coding with Allen Institute Data: A Python Workshop for Undergraduate Educators this summer.
