Bio:

Jim is the Director of Scientific Operations for the Allen Institute for Neural Dynamics. He joined the Allen Institute for Brain Science in 2012, where he led a team to use the Patch-seq technique to catalogue the electrophysiological, morphological, and transcriptomic profile of thousands of neurons from mouse and human brain sections, publicly released as part of the Allen Cell Types Database. While at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, Jim played an active role in the Showcase Symposium and Next Generation Leader programs. Previously, as a postdoc at UCSF, he studied the role of the TMEM16A ion channel in pain processing. As a graduate student at Harvard, Jim engineered a genetically encoded fluorescent sensor for ATP. He began his scientific pursuits as an undergraduate at Rutgers University, where he studied potassium current in auditory neurons. Jim earned an M.B.A. at the University of Washington, with a focus on technology management. He joined the Allen Institute for Neural Dynamics in 2020 as the Director of Scientific Operations, where he and his team support and accelerate the work of the scientific team. Jim has two kids (6 and 8 years old) who keep him very busy. He also enjoys crabbing and clamming in PNW waters and cooking his catch.
