Shuhua earned her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oregon and later completed her master’s degree in Medicinal Chemistry at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where her research focused on evaluating mitochondria-targeting anticancer agents. Her graduate work led to a first-author publication in Bioorganic Chemistry. After completing her degree, Shuhua joined a contract research organization as a Business Development Representative, where she analyzed intellectual property and helped initiate in-licensing partnerships with biotech companies. This experience gave her a broader view of how scientific ideas move from early discovery toward real-world applications. Motivated by her passion for hands-on research, she later returned to the lab as a Research Assistant at Oregon Health & Science University, where she worked on projects involving molecular biology, AAV-based gene therapy, and the genomic evolution of orthoflaviviruses. Outside the lab, Shuhua enjoys pottery, yoga, and spending time with her family and cat.
