Matthew Valley, Ph.D.

Scientist II

Matt joined the Allen Institute in 2014 as a member of the Neural Coding group where he studies cortical systems engaged in visual sensory processing. Matt majored in Neuroscience at Carleton College and received his PhD with Stuart Firestein at Columbia University in New York. There, he studied the functional impact of adult-neurogenesis on olfactory bulb circuits.  This work continued during his postdoc with Pierre-Marie Lledo at the Pasteur Institute in Paris where he broadened his technical expertise in electrophysiology and optophysiology. Today, Matt is thrilled to explore the mouse visual system as a part of the large-scale neurophysiology efforts underway at the Allen Institute.


Research Interests

Our perception of the outside world is heavily influenced by prior knowledge and expectation, but little is known about how this sort of contextual information influences the different stages of sensory processing. At the Allen Institute I am excited to be able to explore this question as part of a general effort to understand how visual stimuli are processed to drive behavior. In particular, I am working to dissect the cortical systems engaged during visuo-locomotor behavior. For this, I combine behavioral analysis, functional imaging of neural activity, and perturbation of cortical systems.
