We are in this together.
A statement on behalf of the Allen Institute
June 19, 2020
This statement on behalf of Allen Institute Leadership is being sent on Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, June 19, 1865.
Dear Allen Institute research community, friends and colleagues:
The Allen Institute Leadership stands with the Black people within our community, our country and the world.
Black lives matter. We are listening, and we acknowledge the hurt and pain Black employees face and commit to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment. We will foster a Black community within our organization and ensure Black employees have a voice.
We recognize that racism has been pervasive in scientific research. Black scientists have been underrepresented, and we must do better. We commit to providing opportunities for Black scientists and leaders within the Allen Institute, our councils, our collaborations and publications.
Eradicating systemic racism will take time and will be a long journey. We understand this and are committed to a more inclusive community and an environment where Black people will be the norm, not the exception.
We want to be more than allies. We want to further our commitment as accomplices. We are in this together.
